Ayanta caves

Ayanta is a town in India located in the vast plateau of Maharashtra, world famous for a deep, winding gorge of black basalt cliff in a semicircle about eighty or a hundred feet high, are 30 caves with intricate portals reminiscent Petra.

It seems that the caves were excavated early in the second century BC and the latest data of the seventh century AD. Buddhist monks and teachers unknown chiseled basalt quarry for many years to mimic the temples of the time while anonymous artists shaped in their walls, walls that have astonished by its quality, color and perfection.

The thirty caves are five shrines (chaytanias) and twenty monasteries (viharas), where the monks spent the monsoon months removed were used for nine centuries until, in the Middle Ages, were abruptly abandoned to oblivion without nobody knew for sure why, but it is suspected that the tigers were probably abundant in the region by that time, the cause of abandonment.
